NMVTIS Consumer Access Product Disclaimer
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is an electronic database that provides information on certain vehicles titled in the United States. It is a dependable source for title and brand history but does not include detailed records of a vehicle’s repair or maintenance history.
Federal law requires states, insurance carriers, and salvage and junk yards to report information regularly to NMVTIS. However, not all vehicles are represented in the system, as some states do not yet submit their data. Those that do report provide updates at different intervals—some in real time, others within 24 hours or over several days.
NMVTIS may not reflect serious vehicle damage if the vehicle was not officially declared a “total loss” by an insurer or branded accordingly by a state agency. Conversely, insurance companies may be obligated to report a “total loss” even if the state has not issued a salvage or junk title.
A report based on NMVTIS data is not a replacement for a professional vehicle inspection. Consumers are encouraged to arrange for an independent inspection to identify any hidden issues. While NMVTIS Data Providers may supplement their reports with condition details from additional sources, NMVTIS data itself includes:
Information from participating state titling agencies.
Coverage for multiple vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, RVs, buses, and tractors (commercial vehicles may be partially reported in some states).
“Brand” information from state records, offering insights into a vehicle’s condition or history—though brand definitions may vary by state.
The most recent odometer reading from state title records.
Reports of total loss vehicles from insurers and auto recyclers, beginning March 31, 2009.
Data from junk and salvage yards involved in the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) Program of 2009.
